USA Data Services online backup solution is quite simple to use. Since there's no hardware to install, you can start backing up your critical business data to our secure data centers in under 30 minutes, Your data is encrypted before it leaves your computer so your business data will stay confidential. No special dedicated connections are necessary, your business's internet connection is used to transfer data.
The Backup Safe's storage management software is installed on all machines that have data that needs to be protected. Installation is straight forward and simple.
Using the management software, you create, configure, and schedule jobs to backup your data.
Your company's machines will then gather and encrypt the data then transmit it over a secure 128-bit SSL connection to our data center.
We replicate your data to another remote data center hundreds of miles away. This helps to ensure that your data is safe from disasters and always available 24 hours a day.
After each backup job is complete, an email report providing information about the backup job will be sent to you.
USA Data Services will also contact you via email if your any of your systems miss a scheduled backup job by more than 6 hours.
How can USA Data Services receive so much data each night?
We utilize two redundant OC3 internet connections providing 155Mbps each. This allow us to receive high amounts of data from our customers. We have also taken the following measures to help businesses efficiently transfer data to our storage server.
All data is compressed and encrypted before transfer. This helps reduce network and storage requirements for both us and the customer.
Only data that has changed since the last backup is transmitted. This reduces backup times immensely. The average business changes less that 5% of their data daily.
Delta file backups allow backing up of large files, such as databases, in small increments. A 2GB file might only have 50MB of data change since the last full backup. With delta technology, only the 50MB that has changed needs to be backed up.
Most backup jobs are ran after business hours. This allows full use of a business's internet connection.
What about the first backup?
The initial backup is the most data intense, since all data on a system has to be transmitted to our data center. We handle this issue two different ways.
A job can be set to run a scheduled number of hours. Start the backup at 6:00 p.m. and allow it to run until 6:00 a.m. By doing this, it will allow you to backup your data to our servers over several evenings. How long depends on the amount of data and internet upload speed. Most can be completed in 2-3 evenings or over a weekend.
Our backup management software allows backing up to a local device such as a USB hard drive. This device is then shipped to one of our data centers for local seeding. Since the data is encrypted, shipping the drive should not be a concern. After we copy the data to our backup servers, you are notified that you can then proceed to backup via the internet.
Even though the second option seems quicker, we have discovered that due to shipping times, the first option can be just as quick for most businesses..
Remember, after the initial backup, the following backups will run much faster.
